Rotto..what and where?

I am headed over to Rotto for a couple days at the end of January. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to fish and what to throw at them?

I assume you will be land based?

Most of my Rotto fishing has been out of a boat, although generally not far from shore. I'd be trying the bays towards the west end, say from around Salmon Bay/Ricey onwards. The closer areas can be good to, but may be packed with swimmers etc. in January. Small clousers (white, yellow over white, chartreuse over white etc.) should get you into some fish. Vary your depth and speed of retrieve a bit and you should be a good chance of getting into Herring, Skippy and Flathead. King George and Tailor could also be a chance. Definitely worth berleying a bit too if you can - it will help bring the fish into your area.

Samsons and Yellow Tail Kings can also be caught at times close in at Rotto - look for a reefy drop off with some deepish water near by. Berley will definitely improve your chances with these.

Also the natural jetty, you can fish both sides depend on the wind.

Hi Henry, back in the days i use to catch a lot of buff bream around little salmon bay. Small green/gold charlies were the go. Landed them up to around the 3kg mark and lost the occasional bigger ones.

North facing bays like Little Armstrong are the go when the Freo Doctor kicks in.
Like Dave says, a little burley goes a long way.
