Hello and some salty flies
Hey guys, a quick interweb hello and show off some flies i been tying over here in Perth on holidays, may have seen a few of you down in Mandurah recently (i am the one with the 2 hander) i generally tie classic atlantic salmon flies and fish them for steelhead and migratory browns in Canada but no stranger to salt Glad to be around some likeminded dudes into the fly. Going to be around till late May here.

Hi Mike
Nice looking flies there.
Our Australian Salmon run is just about to happen.
If you upsize the hooks on those surf candies to a 1/0 they would be the perfect fly for them. The baitfish profiles will also be good for them.
Salmon can be caught shore based as well. The start of Salmon season in Perth waters is spectacular. They literally arrive overnight. Average size of fish is 4 to 6 kg. Should start seeing them arrive early March.

Tony was that you in Mandurah at the end of the day with those sweet looking avalon flies in your box?
Looking forward to salmon here, lucky my folks own a place in Eagle Bay and have tangled with them before, speaking of which i did spook one a few weeks back off a certain reef, looked resident but i gotta get down often in next couple of months to enjoy the wine and fly fishing. also have a trip booked in Exmouth in late April which i am excited about!

Yeah that was me. Keep in touch, as I'm keen to get onto the salmon with the dhers. Very much a beginner with the long rods, but always keen to learn.

Ahh yeah those flies looked really good, that avalon style just puts the pattern in a defensive mode sitting on the bottom which just adds to it. Really nice flies!
DH is very simple, the internet and wealth of information makes it seem difficult or more technical than it should be. I am fascinated by using it in the salt, tested a few set ups and really relying on a scandi line, long leader, and in particular a heavy running line like a 50lb opst to stop tangles and kinks (on rivers i would use more like 30). Followed pretty much what they run on East coast USA chasing stripers and bluefish.
As i understand Max Garth was a bit of a pioneer when it came to running the DH here and had a bit of joy and success with it, pity he is not still around. I keep thinking of these new 3wt trout spey rods for the bread and butter fish around the metro area then a bigger long surf rod for bigger shore based antics.
If anyone wants to go for a cast or has any questions i would be glad to help. And if anyone is visiting Canada i can help out with spots too.

Count me in on a DH casting session. I've got a couple of them but have never really gotten around to practicing with them as I should have.
