looking at getting a decent vice, would prefer one with the weighted bottom not the clamp on the edge of the table type. What should I be looking at and how much?
Been pondering the same question myself the last couple of weeks- I've narrowed my list down to a couple of contenders:
HMH spartan or Standard between $300-360 pretty much all that you need in a vice full rotary etc... I think a bit less with the club discount at Flyworld.
Also there is an Atlas vice that is being sold at Bluewater- About $400 but a solidly built piece of machinery. Obviously the 10% off helps out a fair bit too.
I have a rezetti traveller- good vice but some limitations. The vice jaws offset is a bit too closed. Bit overpriced for what it is too.
My advice is to not skimp on this piece of equipment. Buy the one you want now rather than buying a cheapy and realising you should have lashed out. A good one will still be perfect when you're ready to hang up the fly rods for ever.
The Dyna King trekker, unless you want to spend more on one of its big brothers. Full rotary head. Jaws are just about the best in the market, especially for saltwater sized hooks. Has a smaller base, but there's enough weight there that vies doesn't move around when tying.
Lots of accessories if you're into that sort of thing.
These things will last a lifetime of tying.
I really LOVE my Dyna-King Barracuda Deluxe. Does all I need and looks like it will well and truly out-live me.
I've got a Trekker too, but it's just not at the same level as the Barracuda Deluxe. Does okay for travelling but I use the rotary function of the Deluxe all the time and miss it on the Trekker.
Good choice Craig, you can't go wrong with a Dyna-King, a quality vice like that makes fly tying a pleasure and you will be tying flies on it for the rest of your life probably. That's why I have two of them (Voyager II and a Barracuda Deluxe) I suppose ? Always buy the best vice you can stretch your budget out too, that's my advice.
