Whiting on poppers

the warmer months & the summer is coming!

and the whiting become targets on the flats around fremantle on poppers! anyone actually
targetted whiting in the swan with popper flies?

its something im gonna try this summer! done it on bream lures a few years back! its gotta be possible with flies!

Hi Stephen,

I haven't done it before, but it is something I am keen to give a try this Summer too. There are a few spots in the Peel estuary that could be worth a go as well.

We should make Whiting on a popper one of the targets for a Summer metro field day

its def something im gonna hammer this season! specially cause i work in fremantle! after work park up down by pier 21 wade out and cast poppers around!

Now i gotta do some research on flies to tie.. I would think basic white poppers with a bit of red & white on size 10 & 8 hooks!

anyone got any pictures?

I'm keen to try it, but from what I hear, it's very difficult on popper flies. The spin-rod guys say you can't pause in the retrieve or the buggers lose interest, so it's going to have to be two-handed stripping all the way.

The December field day has been changed to a 2 day affair in the Swan River instead of Golden Ponds , so we will put this challenge in, and also Mulloway, as there have been a few hanging around the bridges late at night lately, maybe we should keep it to those two so we get some real attempts happening at these species, or maybe just a popper fly challenge as i reakon flathead would go a popper fly in the shallows, that would be interesting.

I've been doing well on gurglers with a stinger hook tied in. Sent some to a mate in Bunbury and he's been getting then there as well. The stingers makes a big difference. Just keep the retrieve ahead of the blowies. Some big ones around ATM.

I have caught the whiting on poppers bug.

For me a continious medium pace retrieve worked. I was shaking the tip of the spin rod to get spray which seems to be the attractor. No jerking. You could double hand retrieve under your arm easy.

The other morning while popping with some friends for whiting a large swirl appeared that left a big hole behind the other fellows popper in 2 feet of water, as per Rohans description at the AGM.
The fellow I was fishing with both looked at each saying together what the hell was that. I was thinking possible Mulloway, GH didint even cross my mind until another friend picked a couple up the week after.

You can purchase cork poppers with feather to the rear cheap as these days. They come in packs of 3 in fact. They will work if you want to get on with the fishing. Watch out because the tailor hit them and that possible GH attracted by the commotion.

Rohan should be able to point you in the right direction on the poppers made by Instinct I think. In the east they put them on surf rigs as Salmon attractors but they are an exact for the old popper fly.
