Advice on fliy lines and gear

Hi guys, please give me some guidance on what fly lines to buy when I settle in Albany from South Africa. I want to get a floater, intermediate and sinking lines. The guys in SA are doing away with sinking and using intermediate for poppers. What grain sinking line should I get. I also have a 10wt rod with sl6 Shilton reel. Will this suffice. Any thoughts will sincerely be appreciated.

The Shilton SL6 will be awful. Throw it my way and I'll dispose of it in a thoughtful way .... (Your 10wt and the Shilton will be perfect for salmon and mulloway (kob) )

The water is cold there, so you'll prefer cold water lines. Other than that, there is no way to advise you on specific lines because only you know your preferred casting style. You're going to get as many different suggestions as you get responses: everyone has a favourite line and no two of us will agree on it.

I love long-head lines like the Airflo Striper, but I also use lines like the Rio Outbound Short intermediate when the situation requires it. Both are good lines and both can be used for the same species, but how I fish the lines is very different. For example, The OBS WF10I is great for throwing heavy flies short distances from the kayak. The Airflo Striper WF10I is great for distance casting to salmon from a boat or shore. Those two lines can be swapped for the other situation, but I prefer not to.

In other words, make your own mind up. Whatever you've been using in SA will work here too.

Hi Rod. As Graeme has mentioned, you'll mostly need cold water lines. There's only a month or two where temperatures will get hot enough to warrant tropical lines. Cold water lines in a 10 weight are a little more challenging to find, but they are out there.
Having tried many lines over the years, I pretty much fish Rio and Scientific Angler lines only these days. If you stick to lines from these two companies, you can't go too far wrong.
If you've had the rod for a while, work out what sort of lines it likes, and take it from there.

If you've got a lighter rod you'll want to bring that with you too. Plenty of bread and butter species available fromt he shore I hear down there.

Mate even in the summer it doesn't get hot enough to warrant tropical lines so all temperature or cold water lines will be the go for down here. I think on lines it depends where u are fishing and targetting. As for down here depends what kind of beach or rock u are fishing off. Than if u are fishing off a boat u will want different lines all together.

Hi Matt, our visa is being processed at the moment but I believe it's about 15 months. During this period I am hoping to come over on a years hoiiday visa. Thanks for the input.

Hi Adam I have a 5, 6/7 and 2x9wts as well. Not too sure whether I'll get to going offshore. This means extra kit and more nights with me sleeping with the dog

Rod you may want to leave the 10 at home then. If your going to be without a boat then one of the other weights may get used more often.

Matt what do you fish with mostly without a boat?

If it was me I'd squeeze the 5 or 6/7 in for every week use and use the 10 (or 9) for when the salmon are in or if you go north.
