Grenough River
Grenough River
With the next field day being the Grenough river, I was wondering if anyone has some information on species to target and flies worth taking as I have never fished there and would like to attend this one.
Re: Grenough River
A new one for most of us Michael, but i've fished the river a few times, there are a lot of Giant herring in there, plus bream, Mangrove Jacks etc , It looks like a bit of a pond but a lot of species get land locked in there so anything could show up. Mullet respond well on anything black according to the locals who use a bit of black electrical tape wrapped around a hook shank I did well on them on a brown weed fly ( not green ).No motors allowed not even electric, but paddle power is ok so its a good kayak spot. Other places to try are dongara and geraldton marina's for a big variety including some very good bream and jacks. Then there is beach reef if you're keen and the swell/wind is down enough. Flat rocks and 9 mile areas have the potential for big tailor and even a Land Based wa Jewie on fly. That would be something, unlikely but a definite possibility . Time constraints would be the hard part. A deceiver for the reefs and a closer as an all rounder in the river is probably all thats needed. If you know the area and have a 4wd there a some hidey holes along the coast at the ends of gutters where they meet reefs where tailor could be found schooling within close range without too much wave action due to protection from the reefs.
Re: Grenough River
Thank you for the information, sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I will start tying and buying a few darker coloured flies to try. Might have to make a few trips there

Re: Grenough River
