Saltwater Flyrodders

I was stuck in a thick shoal of mullet yesterday, I estimated their numbers to be in the 1000's! It was so calm that when a wave broke over the reef you could see into the wave and literally watch them surf in it. But no matter how often I changed flies and chased after them I couldn't hook up. I caught 3 before in one session everything from clousers to deceivers. But nothing worked this time. Are there any secret weapons out there?

The following fly combination works for me.

Gurgler fly (size 4 - 6) with a small dropper nymph fly (not to heavily weighted) . The dropper fly should be between 15cm and 20cm below the Gurgler tied onto the hook bend.

User the gurgler as a strike indicator. Cast in front of the feeding school and give the dropper fly time to sink. Keep tension on the fly line by using a constant slow retrieve and watch for any movement on that strike indicator.

I have found that the mullet will take most small flies if it is kept in the 20cm just below the surface. The dropper fly must have a natural drift (suspended).

Thanks Andre, I get what your saying, essentially its like float fishing. I'll have a few ready for the next time I come in contact with the little devils!!! lol
