Fly tying kits for beginners

Hi Flyrodders,
Dale here from the club, I'm keen on learning how to tie my own basic fly patterns for bream and flatheads etc ( I can barely tie my own shoes) Now do I get a basic kit or buy a vice, tools and materials separately, or If anyone has a vice and tools for sale please let me know.

I have an old Dina vice that would get you going. See me at the next meeting.
Personally I would not go with a kit as you a likely to end up with a pile of stuff you don't use.
Just get a vice, basic tools to start with and get the materials for the fly's you are going to be tying and expand as you progress.
Be warned, once you go down this path, you will need a larger study at home. You may also find that you get strange looks from shop assistance at Red dot and Dress shops when you are in buying lots of shiny things.

Fly tying is addictive. Before you go into a shop to purchase materials, make a list of what you ACTUALLY need. Grab a fly and work out what materials you need to make that particular fly. You can get carried away and purchase stuff that you don't actually need.
There's lots of help on the Internet. We also have a tying day coming up soon.
A couple of books worth getting. Feather Brain, I think by Drew Chicone. A Few Good Flies by Peter Morse. The last one Pop Flyes by Bob Popovics.

I also still like Lefty Krehs video as a good starter on basic ties.

Hi Dale, it might be worth your while having a chat with Chris at Fly world, or Rohan at Bluewater Melville, and have a budget in mind, this is what I tend to do when I'm tight for cash.
