Hey guys, newbie here to the forum. Been fishing for a while with spinning gear but have only just started to take a fly rod out with us(brother and I) on the boat the last few months. Started with a beginners Reddington 9wt outfit that came all setup in a box but have since upgraded to Innovator and Shimano setup. Im sure I wouldve seen a few other members from the forum out on the salmon schools over the last 6 months, my brother and I watched in awe at how well you guys wave a wand. Hoping to learn a lot more on here from guys that know much more about the sport than we do
Anyway here's a few pics from the last 6 months or so..

Welcome Beau. Awesome pics. Been a spectacular year for Salmon.
It's a rare photo you have there of that ugly blue boat. It only comes out once or twice a year. Usually in salmon season. Rest of the time, it props up stuff in it's owner's garage. :P

What lb line were you using for your leader? I hear the salmon have rough mouths that fray the line?

Not that I've seen. But I use 20lb as tippet in any case.

Cheers,
Graeme

Thanks Graeme, I'll start off with 20lb so and see how I go.

20lb Fluorocarbon tippet is fine but expect to replace leaders or trim back after each fish or so, and use a landing net. Using 40lb or so bite tippet can reduce re-rigging episodes.

Ya I thought 40lb wasnt as invisible as I would like flyfishing. Ended up using 15lb for Giant Herring because they were shying away from the 20lb stuff. And learnt the hard way to retie back on the fly after landing a fish, or not even that, but every time I got a good solid take and had a fish on for a bit I would check the fly straight away before chucking it back out. I guess I will start with 20lb for the slamon and then see how I go when I start getting amoungst them and weather or not I should up it to 25lb or 30lb along the way. Im fishing from shoreline.

What type and size flies should I be looking at picking up for chasing salmon? What kind of ground do they like to patrol and are they near the shore often?
