Saltwater Flyrodders

Im looking at getting geared up for a trip next year to either Tamala Station or up to Cape Peron. The trip will be a 4wd trip only and shore based so no boat. I quite like the idea of getting away from boat ramp crowds as best as possible and small trip shore based for a week or so would be great.

Im looking at maps and speaking to people who have done a few trips up there, plus also have the article by Morsie in flylife and another done by a mate in WAFM. It all looks very appealing.

Basically, what I want out of the trip is to do a bit of exploring somewhere new to me, live off what I catch and take a heap of photos.

Ive got a new model colorado 4x4, swag, engel, recovery gear etc and I reckon I can get a couple of mates keen to go (take 2 cars).

Where would you suggest?

I've recently returned from a trip to Exmouth, during which I spent two nights at Tamala Station. I've also had a couple of holidays at Denham and fished Peron on those.

Go to Peron.

There are a lot more options to fish shore-based at Peron, with many more places to go if the wind is unfavourable from any one direction. Shore-based at Tamala is a wasteland by comparison.

you have just entered what I've got currently siting in my driveway.peron would be the place to go for me.

Yes sometimes the boat is just a little annoying to have to pack up and tow about. I really enjoyed doing some shore bashing in exmouth and while it wasnt huge fish, its very rewarding. Plus the casting arm gets huge!

vote 1 Peron. Track is very sandy in spots and does pull up a few cars on hot days.

It also has big lagoon which I have heard that the mouth area holds species of interest. Never fished it though and from google earth it looks to be a long walk

So I take it the flats around Tamala at the bottom arent always as productive as made out to be... a mate is going up there in August, it will be interesting to see how and where he goes.

Apparently the fishing off shore at Tamala is pretty good. Shore-based there sucks though ...

I'd do Peron as well. Shore based options to hide from any wind direction. Warmer, more diverse habitat and deeper water closer to shore. Tamala can be a bit of a waste land with limited structure and species.
