The West Australian today has reported another fish kill in the upper Swan River. The location is between the middle Swan Bridge and Ellenbrook.

Hopefully it’ll be confined to a relatively small area in the upper reaches. Lower down it seems to have picked up a bit since my last outing. I went down to my local spot in the Como area last night for an hour before dark and caught 3 nice bream (biggest 34cm) and a grunter. There appeared to be quite a lot of activity with lots of bait fish and some monster mullet. I didn't see a single blowie ...

Perhaps the bream migrate down when water conditions deteriorate.

Interesting little session yesterday. But this is a bit of a rant.

Left home to fish the river and decided to fish the southern side of the Narrows. A few people around fishing bait. Against my better Judgement I decided to give it some time and wade out to the spot to cast at the pylon. Boats turned up dropping crab pots right on the pylon. (Where the bream tend hang out.)

A Kid was running around behind me so I had to watch the back cast. Her dad was fishing bait with his family. The Dad baitfishing who is a nice enough guy sees what I am doing and comes out for a couple of casts. He get a couple bream. (Both kept and both well undersize.)

Then some old duffer and his fat wife with tuckshop arms set up camp right in the area where my back cast is. The Old Guy glares at me for stealing his spot before he got there. He can see what I am doing but what the hell he is going to fish right there. He can fish any where else like 10 meters to the side but there is where he wants to be.

Forget the fact I am standing on the rocks that have been exposed by the current so if he gets his sinker stuck in the rocks he will never get it out. He is going to fish right there right behind me and throw his line over my head.

So this is what I don't get. The southern side is shallow water and you have to wade to get out cast near the pylon. The place is full rubbish and broken glass on the shore.

The Northern side has nice grass to sit on. Doesn't have the urine smell and you get a couple of nice park benches to sit on too. The fish are appear to bigger too. So when I fish the Narrows why don't I see anyone fishing there? Come to think of it why don't I?

Anyway decide to move around to the Northern side. Nobody around there. Nice grass etc etc. Fishing in roughly the area that Roennfeldt got his Mulloway and the big bream during the day. First cast is a 30cm Bream. I get some more of that size and go home happy. I will be fishing the Northern side more often now.

I was on foot that day, and again recently, but didn't see anything this time except lots of big mullet, had a small brown arctic fox fur crazy charlie on at first and lobbed it in front of a school, and to my surprize the largest fish ( and lead fish ) dipped its head on the fly, i felt nothing but struck and almost hooked the thing, weight and the fish bolted but left the fly behind, so that was interesting. Should have kept trying for them, because there was nothing else. Looked out the end of the como jetty on the way home, and there was avery large school of something under the baitfish. They waere chasing the fly but short nipping at best despite continually dropping fly size. Bream were amongst them, but the others ( lots of ) looked like yellow eye mullet ( pilch), although i found it hard to confirm what they were, Anyone know ?

Just had a chuck down at Claremont jetty. A lot of baitfish and small whiting around but pretty quite apart from a few dolphins rounding up the bait.
